Minor Arcana

The Minor Arcana (Latin: “lesser secrets”), also known as the pip cards, are the 56 suit cards of the Tarot deck. While the 22 Major_Arcana depict the grand archetypal stations of the soul’s journey, the Minor Arcana map the daily textures of lived experience — the mundane-but-essential realm where cosmic forces manifest as relationships, challenges, emotional states, and material conditions.

Structure and Symbolism

The Minor Arcana comprise four suits of 14 cards each: ten numbered cards (Ace through Ten) and four Court cards (Page, Knight, Queen, King).

This fourfold structure mirrors the Hermetic Qabalah’s Four Worlds, the four Jungian cognitive functions, and the four classical elements — demonstrating the “As Above, So Below” principle at the level of daily life.

Planetary Associations (Golden Dawn System)

The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn assigned planetary correspondences to the numbered cards:

This mapping places each numbered card at the intersection of its suit’s elemental world and its number’s sefirotic position — creating a precise coordinate system on the Tree_of_Life.

The Court Cards

The Court cards function as archetypal personalities — echoing Jungian archetypes within each elemental domain:

  • Pages: The Child — raw potential, the student, emergence
  • Knights: The Hero — active pursuit, quest, movement
  • Queens: The receptive mastery — Mother/Anima energies
  • Kings: The established authority — Father/Senex energies
