Hod

Hod (meaning “Splendor” or “Glory”) is the eighth of the ten Sefirot on the Kabbalistic Tree_of_Life. It sits at the bottom of the Pillar of Severity.

Hod is the sphere of intellect, logic, rational thought, and communication. It provides the necessary vessels, structures, and theoretical frameworks to appropriately channel the boundless, watery emotional energy of Netzach. If Netzach is the raw inspiration of the artist or the drive of the animal, Hod is the technique, the language, and the scientific method required to make that drive understandable and useful.

The Inversion: Samael

The Qlippothic shadow of Hod is Samael (The Poison of God). If Hod is the healthy application of logic to structure the world, Samael is the cold, dead end of pure rationality shorn of emotional connection—intellectual hubris, rationalized cruelty, and the “poison” of seeing everything merely as a machine, completely devoid of spirit.

Esoteric and Archetypal Connections

  • Mercury: Astrologically, Hod corresponds to Mercury and deities like Hermes and Thoth. It governs magic (in its technical, ritual form), language, writing, and the bridging of concepts.
  • The Scientist / Magician: Both the ceremonial magician mapping the planes via Gematria and the secular scientist use the energy of Hod to categorize reality.
  • Forming the Astral: In conjunction with Netzach, Hod filters down into Yesod (the astral realm), providing the symbolic language of our dreams.
