Gevurah
Gevurah (meaning “Severity”, “Strength”, or “Judgment”) is the fifth of the ten Sefirot on the Kabbalistic Tree_of_Life. It sits on the Pillar of Severity, directly beneath Binah.
Gevurah is the principle of restriction, discipline, and destruction. While its counterpart Chesed seeks to infinitely expand, Gevurah acts as the necessary boundary maker, pruning away that which is excessive. It enforces cosmic law and justice. Without Gevurah, creation would lose all shape; without Chesed, Gevurah would annihilate creation entirely.
The Inversion: Golachab
The Qlippothic shadow of Gevurah is Golachab (The Burners). If Gevurah is the precise surgical removal of what is unnecessary for the sake of health, Golachab is violence for the sake of violence—cruelty, wrath, and pure destruction divorced from any higher purpose.
Esoteric and Archetypal Connections
- The Warrior Archetype: Gevurah perfectly aligns with the disciplines of the warrior, where limitation, pain, and austerity forge strength.
- Mars: Astrologically, Gevurah corresponds to Mars, representing martial power, conflict, and the burning energy needed to break through obstacles.
- The Nigredo Phase: In the alchemical transformation, Gevurah’s destructive aspect is necessary for the initial breaking down (putrefactio) of the ego.
