Hypnosis
Hypnosis is a trance state of focused attention, heightened suggestibility, and reduced peripheral awareness. In the archive, hypnosis appears in two contrasting contexts: as a legitimate therapeutic and exploratory tool in Jungian and transpersonal practice, and as a weaponized technique in MKUltra and its predecessors (Project BLUEBIRD, Project ARTICHOKE).
In esoteric cinema, Peter Gibbons’s hypnotic session in Office Space functions as an accidental Nigredo: the hypnotist dies mid-session, leaving Peter permanently “dissolved” — his programmed corporate persona obliterated, his authentic self unexpectedly liberated.
