Project BLUEBIRD

Project BLUEBIRD (1950–1951) was the CIA’s first systematic mind-control program, exploring the use of hypnosis, drugs, and behavioral techniques for interrogation, memory erasure, and the creation of involuntary agents.

Functioning as the initial blueprint for state-sponsored Inverted_Initiation, BLUEBIRD explicitly utilized hypnosis and forced amnesia not for psychological healing, but for permanent, weaponized compartmentalization. By attempting to fracture the subject’s memory and identity, it laid the groundwork for manufacturing controllable alters through psychological trauma. It was renamed Project ARTICHOKE in 1951 and eventually absorbed into MKUltra in 1953.
