Chokhmah
Chokhmah (meaning “Wisdom”) is the second of the ten Sefirot on the Kabbalistic Tree_of_Life. Sitting at the top of the Pillar of Mercy (the right-hand column), it is the first emanation that possesses distinct characteristics after the pure singularity of Kether.
Chokhmah represents pure, dynamic, unformed energy—the raw spiritual spark of creation before it is shaped into anything concrete. It is intimately connected to the primordial masculine principle.
The Inversion: Ghagiel
The Qlippothic shadow of Chokhmah is Ghagiel (The Hinderers). If Chokhmah is the free-flowing emergence of new ideas, divine inspiration, and raw creative power, Ghagiel is the complete prevention and stagnation of this flow—the confusion that blocks the divine spark from ever reaching manifestation.
Esoteric and Archetypal Connections
- The Father_Archetype: Chokhmah is often titled Abba (the Supernal Father) in Kabbalistic texts. It represents the inseminating force that must unite with the structuring womb of Binah (the Mother).
- The Zodiac and Starry Heavens: In Hermetic Qabalah, Chokhmah is often associated with the sphere of the Zodiac—the vast cosmic field of dynamic possibilities.
- The Alchemical Fire: Within the alchemical transformation, it relates to the primordial spiritual fire that must eventually be cooled and structured.
