ER=EPR Conjecture

The ER=EPR conjecture, proposed by Juan Maldacena and Leonard Susskind (2013), asserts that Einstein-Rosen bridges (ER — wormholes in General Relativity) and Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen pairs (EPR — quantum entanglement) are fundamentally the same physical phenomenon described in different mathematical languages.

Two Readings of the Conjecture

StrengthClaim
Modest ViewEntangled black holes are connected by geometric wormholes. Entanglement is a “fungible resource” that can be transmuted into spacetime geometry.
Ambitious ViewEven simple Bell pairs (two entangled electron spins) are connected by microscopic, Planck-scale wormholes.

Implications for Quantum Interpretation

Susskind uses ER=EPR to argue that the Copenhagen interpretation and Everett’s Relative State (Many-Worlds) Formulation are dual descriptions of the same physical reality, related by the geometry of entanglement. See full analysis in Copenhagen_vs_Everett_Susskind.

  • In Copenhagen, measurement collapses the wave function — geometrically, this “snips” the wormhole connection.
  • In Everett, measurement entangles the observer with the system — geometrically, this adds the observer as a node in a growing wormhole network.

The GHZ-Brane

The tripartite entangled state formed during a Wigner’s Friend measurement maps onto a GHZ state (Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger state) of black holes connected by a wormhole structure. Susskind calls the geometric center of this structure the GHZ-brane — a theoretical object that encodes the duality of both interpretations simultaneously.

Teleportation as Wormhole Transit

Quantum teleportation, in the ER=EPR picture, is not merely information transfer — the quantum state physically traverses the wormhole connecting Alice and Bob’s entangled black holes.

Fractal Non-Locality & Entheogenic Integration

A profound synthesis emerges when comparing the objective structure of ER=EPR to subjective initiatory experiences. The phenomenological states documented in the Entheogen Hypothesis (such as those achieved in the Eleusinian Mysteries)—characterized by the dissolution of time, ego death, and the realization of universal non-local interconnectedness—map directly onto the geometric collapse of spacetime proposed here. The subjective lived experience of high-dose entheogenic rituals behaves mathematically like traversing a macroscopic Einstein-Rosen bridge, bringing distant points of consciousness into immediate entangled contact.
